Together Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Here's a test for partners in committed relationships who enjoy the horror genre: Sit down with your loved one and stream Together. This independent film success of 2025 has now made its online premiere on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it could look like typical physical horror, but within Together resides a deep meditation about our choices in loving one another.

A Debut Feature Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, the actors bring a unique chemistry to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a enduring union.

The narrative commences when the couple move from the urban environment to the countryside for Millie’s job. A commonly used story element, of course, but that’s mostly where the tropes cease. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the protagonists discover an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity begins influencing the duo. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past simple connection.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying of scares, weaving in bits of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes amidst something grotesque). Shanks weaves these elements together seamlessly and delivers them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and removed from his social circle. He fears the idea of totally forfeiting his individual identity in his partner. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie refrains from painting Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie grapple with the kind of problems that come with any relationship over a long period. At their core, they continue to care for one another. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these fears of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory does not come across as overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for staying single. Meanwhile, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could act as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your other half and utter, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can undertake at this very moment.
